Rich Text Format
RTF – is a standard format intended for the exchange of text data. Created in 1982 with the participation of experts from Adobe and Microsoft, so it is supported by most of the software solutions of the latter. It is integrated in Windows with version 2.0, allowing to exchange between applicable annexes. The format provides the ability to create a document in one OS and transfer to another OS, while it is not designed to work with images and other objects. The user can print text in Word, saving it with a .rtf extension, and export it to a recipient using WordPerfect 6.0, regardless of the version of Windows. RTF files can be opened in any modern editor capable of formatting text documents. The format allows you to save the selection settings for text fragments, color solutions for the design of symbols, underlined text and much more.
The specification of this format applies standards of ANSI, PC-8 symbols display, and some others. It sets control words and symbols that act as a command in the formatting process. If an extended text document is saved, the writer RTF processes it, and adapts the symbols of the word processor to the Rich Text Format language. During the reading process, the RTF reader formats the defining symbols, transforming the RTF language into the formatting of the text editor that the document is to visualize.
Microsoft Excel Binary File Format
XLS – is a spreadsheet created by a popular Microsoft Excel application. It includes document data that is located in cells that have a specific address. They can contain formulas, mathematical equations that are associated with information in other cells, and fixed information. It is often used for the development of graphs and charts. The format allows to store and edit a large range of parameters - images, tables, macros, types, diagrams. It has been widely used until the appearance of the 2007 version of Excel, and then it was replaced with the XMLSS extension. The information inside the XLS document is contained in a series of static-size streams, their location is described using several segment distribution tables. It differs in backwards compatibility and supports various file formats created for DOS. It is often used by web browsers to exclude the use of binary formats. The utility is included in the Microsoft office suite and, in addition to Excel, can be opened by various applications like Apache Open Office, Libre Office, adapted to Mac OS, Windows or Linux.
The relevance of the format is explained by its simplicity, although it does not support separate functions, for example, storing VBA macros. Until XMLSS appeared, the Excel application used the Biff extension when formatting, which was created on the basis of the IFF container format. Due to this, changes to the book templates and their contents were available. After the introduction of the new format in 2007, the program has not lost the backward compatible properties, which guarantees the wide distribution of XLS in the future. Subsequently, the XLS extension was replaced by the XLSM, XLSB and XLSX formats.
