M2TS files are popularly used in the storage of video and audio files on Blu-ray discs, DVDs, hard drives, and devices used to store files. Storage of files is in high definition, and it includes the use of Blu-ray Disc Audio or Visual format. BDAV information can be included in the M2TS file format, but they commonly refer to the MPEG-2 Transport Stream. M2TS files are also used in formats related to highly defined recorded video formats referred to as the AVCHD, a basic version of the Blu-ray disc standard.

The MPEG-2 transport stream is modified to form the BDAV container format. The main goal of M2TS files is the optimization of storage space, for example. It uses the variable-rate transport streams rather than constant rates. The BDAV container format comprises one out of three video compressed formats that are MPEG-2, AVC, and SMPTE. The BDAV container format used by the simpler version of Blue-ray equipment has more restrictions and solely contains the MPEG-4 AVC video compaction.
